Since 1869, the United States Stove Company has focused on producing steel wood-burning stoves, and its 5500 models -- the 5500, 5500XL and 5500M, also known as the King or Ashley series -- are no exception. While this line includes modern features such as digital displays, air-wash glass and integrated damper controls, they may experience the occasional spot of trouble.

Straightforward Solutions

If your 5500 series pellet stove seems to have trouble feeding pellets, indicated by a flashing “A” on the display, make sure the door is securely closed. Refill the stove's hopper if the 5500's fire goes out or if it shuts down. If the hopper is full, check it for moist, wet or dirty pellets and replace them with fresh, dry, clean pellets. Remove any debris or pieces of the pellet bag you may find in the hopper. Ensure the hopper lid is closed securely or the 5500 will not operate.

Buffing the Burnpot

When the stove produces a weak flame or a flame that is orange rather than blue, buildup in the burnpot may be to blame. Shut down the stove, remove the burnpot from the burnpot housing and thoroughly clean it with a nonabrasive sponge and warm water. Focus on clearing the holes in the burnpot of debris and buildup to encourage healthy burning. For excess ash, use an ash vacuum, if available. When you remove the pot, you'll notice two plates, one on either side of the burnpot housing; remove those plates to access the rear chamber, and thoroughly wipe down the chamber. Allow all of the components to dry completely before replacing them and restarting the stove.

Exhaust Effects

Like a soiled burnpot, a dirty exhaust system causes numerous issues, including poor burning, and fires that periodically die. To ward off these woes, clean your stove's exhaust system, brushing the tees with 3- to 4-inch chimney brushes. Clear exhaust screens of ash using an ash vacuum cleaner; don't use a standard shop vac for this job, as it may release particles of ash into the surrounding air.

Time to Call

If your 5500 pellet stove's digital display shows a flashing “A” and the glass door is completely shut, this indicates a vacuum issue. The code “ERR-11” signals a vacuum problem. Problems such as this, a faulty circuit board and other more complex mechanical troubles require service from authorized technicians. To request service, call USSC. To take advantage of your stove's warranty, you must keep your receipt and register the appliance at USSC's official website. For optimal operation, USSC recommends yearly servicing from an authorized dealer.
